Q: How am I placed in English 100?
A: For new students (direct entrants), placement in English 100 is determined by their score on the ELPET or TOEFL with TWE. For students coming from IEP, placement in English 100 is determined by their score on the IEP exit exam.

Q: Is English 100 offered in the summer?
A: It is offered in the summer only for the students who fail the spring semester.

Q: What happens if I do poorly on a stage exam?
A: Remember that the final grade is cumulative, so you have to accumulate grades throughout the course. However, if you do not do well on one test, you still stand the chance of achieving in the other tests, provided that you exert more effort and try to enhance your performance.

Q: What are the CALL Labs?
A: CALL stands for Computer Assisted Language Learning. The CALL labs are computer labs for you and other ELI students to use. They are located in the ELI, 338 and 339 Main.

Q: When can I use the CALL Labs?
A: You can use the lab every day from 2:00 to 3:30 pm, and on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 to 12:00 noon (Assembly Hour). These are Open Access hours, when no classes are scheduled.

Q: Which of the skills is the most important?
A: All skills are integrated. Therefore, you have to maintain a profile that indicates that you are demonstrating adequate proficiency in all the skills that you take since they are all equally important.

Q: Am I counted absent if I go to class late?
A: Yes! You are counted a half-day absence if you arrive in class 10 minutes late, and a full day absence if you arrive in class 20 minutes late.

Q: Are medical excuses and absence due to engagement in sports activities included in the 1-day absence policy?
A: Yes! If you are not present in class, you are counted absent, whether you have an excuse or not. Therefore, it is wise to save your absences for real emergencies that might seriously prevent you from attending class.

Q: Does my absence affect my teacher evaluation?
A: No! But you miss a lot if you are not in class. Learning is a total experience inside and outside the classroom, and indeed, what is gained from classroom interaction is never captured but in the classroom.

Q: What happens when I pass English 100?
A: Upon successfully completing the requirements of English 100 and passing the course, you will be placed into the Writing Program, ECLT 101 or ECLT 102, based on your English 100 exit score. The outstanding students in English 100 are allowed to sit for an exemption exam to have the opportunity to be exempted from ECLT 102 and/or ECLT 103.
