"I graduated from the TEFL MA Program at AUC in 1981. It certainly had a positive impact on my career. Up to this moment, I refer to what we learnt and to the experience of being in a learning situation. The practical and theoretical components of the courses were the drive that helped the continuous professional development journey in my TEFL life. I am always happy to hear that there are additional courses that meet the needs in this changing world.

I encourage you and anyone interested in this career to join the MA Program. I am very grateful to John Nelson who encouraged me to take it. I look back and realize that without it I would not have taken many of the enjoyable and gratifying positions I have managed to experience."

The American University in Cairo

I am a graduate of Ain Shams University, and majored in English Literature. I started teaching adults in two Community Colleges in Dallas Texas (USA). This is when I realized I could do something in the field of Adult Education. I returned to Egypt and started working at the Center for Adult & Continuing Education (CACE) as an English Instructor in English Studies Division (ESD). At the time, I obtained my RSA (COTE) Teacher Training Certificate from the same Division. I was then advised to pursue my studies by joining the MA program in the TEFL field at AUC.

When I graduated with the MA in 1997, I started working as full time faculty member in the English Language Institute. In 1998 I started working as a coordinator in the English Studies Division, (CACE). It was at this time that I entered the administrative field of adult education along with maintaining my interest in teaching TEFL and teacher training.

The MATEFL program prepares its candidates for the field of TEFL and Adult Education. It presents a golden opportunity to develop and enhance people's teaching, researching and self-empowerment skills. With an MA in TEFL one gets the real chance to pick and choose and find the best offered workplace environment which he/she wishes to develop and realize a well established career opportunity.

Lecturer, English Department,
Faculty of Arts, Cairo University

Ever since I graduated from the TEFL program in 1989, I have developed a great deal. In my career as a teacher and a teacher trainer, I've made use of the TEFL courses. The textbooks we read, the outside readings we did, and the stimulating discussions we had in class all contributed to form not only the theoretical but also the practical bases on which my teaching both at Cairo University and at AUC was built. I am indebted to all the professors who taught me in the program: Saad Gamal El-Din; Salah El-Araby; Paul Stevens and Fred Perry. I learnt from them what it means to be a committed teacher, and this is what I'm trying to foster in other teachers.

Beth Hawley

Teacher at Cairo American College

Coming to Cairo in 1984, from my sheltered life in the quiet midwest of the United States, I had originally thought that taking classes at AUC wouldn't be much different from other graduate classes I had taken at universities where I had studied before. I didn't expect such a unique environment of the AUC campus, faculty, and fellow students. While I could have learned the content of a TEFL program anywhere in the world, the special classroom and campus climate with the rich contributions from students from different countries, different cultures, and different native languages provided me with an enriched view of the world at large that I never could have experienced back in the US.

I would be remiss if I didn't include the impact of the fine faculty who taught, inspired, cajoled, and intrigued us along the way. After studying many years at several different universities, it is no exaggeration for me to say that AUC was truly the most exhilarating educational experience of all.
