Can I exempt out of any of the Department of Rhetoric and Composition courses 100 level courses?
There are several ways that you can be exempted from certain Department of Rhetoric and Composition courses. You can be exempted from RHET 102 and RHET 103. You cannot be exempted from RHET 101 because you are either placed into it and thus must follow the sequence 102 and 103, or you are placed in RHET 102, which means you do not get an exemption from RHET 101. Exemptions are determined as follows:
- any student who enters AUC with a high enough score in the TOEFL (with TWE) and/or the ELPET tests (this is determined by the Testing Unit at AUC) is eligible to sit for The Department of Rhetoric and Composition's exemption examination
- any student who passes the Intensive English Program (IEP), or English 100 into The Department of Rhetoric and Composition may be recommended to sit for The Department of Rhetoric and Composition's exemption examination.
- certain diplomas (like the International Baccalaureate, or the Advanced Placement examination) may automatically exempt a student from RHET 102 and they may also be eligible to sit for The Department of Rhetoric and Composition's exemption examination. Details may be obtained from Ms. Fahima in the Registrar's Office, telephone: 2797.5006.
- students who transfer from other universities may be eligible for exemption and/or transfer of credit. These requests must be processed through Ms. Fahima in the Registrar's Office, telephone: 2797.5006.
When I am exempted from a course do I get credit for it?
When you are exempted by the Department of Rhetoric and Composition's exemption examination, you do not get credit for the course (there are a few exceptions among IB certificates and transfer students). This means that you will have to make up these credits needed for graduation by taking other courses.
Can I be exempted from more than one course?
Yes. Once you sit for the Department of Rhetoric and Composition's exemption examination, you could be exempted from both RHET 102 and 103. Students who take the RHET 102, 103 sequence cannot be exempted from the 300 level writing courses.
If I am taking the RHET 101, 102, 103 sequence, can I be exempted from 102 and/or 103?
Yes. If a student shows exceptional ability in any of these courses, the teacher may recommend that the student be allowed to sit for the Department of Rhetoric and Composition's exemption examination in the following semester.
