Special Opportunities
Participation in extracurricular activities allows students to broaden their overall university experience. The department encourages Political Science students to participate in several student-run conferences:
Cairo International Model United Nations (CIMUN)
Every spring, AUC hosts the Cairo International Model United Nations conference, held for the first time in 1989 and the first of its kind in the Middle East. More than 400 international and Egyptian students participate in CIMUN each year. The primary goal is to increase student interest in and awareness of the United Nations and international affairs. Through participation in CIMUN, students acquire valuable leadership, management and diplomatic skills. [visit the CIMUN site]
Cairo International Model Arab League (CIMAL)
The Cairo International Model Arab League takes place every fall and is currently the largest student-run conference at AUC. It was held for the first time in 1990, during the period leading up to the Gulf war. The program aims to make students familiar with the activities of the League of Arab States and helps them develop an understanding of the regional and international factors that affect the determination of Arab foreign policy. CIMAL is a valuable venue for intercultural exchange among youth interested in Arab affairs. [visit the CIMAL site]
Model Egyptian Parliament (MEP)
The Model Egyptian Parliament (MEP) is a new student-run program at the American University in Cairo and is supervised by the Political Science Department and the Office of Student Development. The MEP held its first conference from September 28 to October 2, 2004. The Model aims to emphasize the rule of law and the promotion of democracy in Egypt. It trains students on good governance and fundamental values such as citizenship, equality, and public rights. Through an interactive process of debate, deliberation, and compromise, students adopt resolutions relating to important current issues that affect the entire Egyptian society. In the first MEP, three committees of the Egyptian Parliament, the National Security Committee, the Economic Committee, and the Social and Religious Committee, were simulated. The five major parties that were represented in the Model were The National Democratic Party with 49%, Tagammu' Party 11%, Wafd Party 19%, Nasirist Party 7%, and The Muslim Brotherhood 12%.
The Political Science Department also selects and subsidizes AUC delegations to attend international MUN and MAL simulations abroad.
