Chemistry graduates work for pharmaceutical, petrochemical, diagnostics, biotechnology, food, and all other chemical industries. They can join research, clinical, and forensic laboratories. Chemists also work as teachers in various education sectors and as quality control and quality assurance specialists for a variety of agencies.

Distinguished Alumni

The chemistry department is proud of its graduates who have been successful in the pursuit of their academic careers. The following selected examples indicate the outstanding quality of some of our graduates.

Dr. Maha Khaled an AUC graduate of 1983 completed her PhD at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in 1994 in Analytical Chemistry. At VPI she had a grade point average of 4.0 and ranked first in her class of 40 graduate students. Because of the outstanding quality of her work, she received several research and travel awards (The Union Carbide Kenan award for Analytical Chemistry in 1992 and the American Chemical Society, Analytical Division,Graduate Fellowship award in 1993). Her advisor, Dr Harold McNair, sent the Chemistry department of AUC a special recognition letter congratulating the department for the fine training Maha had received at AUC

Dr. Mahnaz El-Kouedi earned her B.Sc. in chemistry from AUC. She received her PhD in chemistry from Georgetown University in 2001. She currently serves as an assistant professor at the department of Chemistry, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, USA

Mr. Hatem Telima (2000) was chosen from more than 100 applicants to receive one of nine Lindbergh awards for a research project concerned with the development of a new vaccine for preventing the spread of schistosomiasis.

Ms. Moushira Ramadan received her B.Sc. in Chemistry (1979) and currently works as the director for quality, environment and safety in the Egyptian Cement Company.

Mrs. Zeinab Hashim received a B.Sc. in Chemistry (1969), a M.Sc. in Solid State Physics (1973) from AUC. She received an MPA degree from Harvard University (1983) and currently works as a treasurer for Citibank Egypt.

Two of our most recent graduates (2003), Ms. Yousra Badiee, and Dhalia Hammoudeh, have received scholarships to join the doctoral program in Chemistry at Georgetown University in Washington DC, USA. They started their graduate programs in Jan 2004.

The current executive director of American Chamber of Commerce and the chemical supervisor of Fuji Films Inc are graduates of AUC Chemistry. Other graduates work as speech and language therapists or own their business.

In addition to their success in graduate studies, many chemistry graduates have attained very good positions in a variety of careers including: tourism, United Nations, shipping, environmental work, medical analysis, dyes, banking, paint industry, petroleum, journalism, and education. It is of interest to note the countries in which our graduates work: Egypt, USA , Canada, Oman , UK., Kuwait, Jordan, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Netherlands, Australia; Switzerland, Austria, India, Kenya, Senegal, Greece, France, Sudan, Uganda and Lebanon.
