All Arabic language credit classes at AUC are administered and taught by the ALNG unit. The courses are offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. In addition, some courses are also offered in an intensive three-week winter session.
The unit offers its courses to cater the needs of the following students:
Degree Students
Undergraduate Students
Since the university is set in an Arabic-language speaking milieu, it expects each student to have an appropriate knowledge of the Arabic language. Thus, all undergraduate fulltime students entering AUC may be required to take up to two courses in Elementary Modern Standard Arabic to meet the university’s Arabic language requirement for their bachelor degrees. Exemption and required number of courses are based upon the results of the placement exam.
On the other hand, some students are exempted. Citizens of, or permanent residents in, Arab countries, and that have completed the Thanawiya Amma, the Tawjihi or passed the Egyptian Ministry of Education-approved Arabic examination or IGCSE students who achieved a minimum of "C" grade in the "Arabic First Language” extended subject are not required to take ALNG courses.

Middle East Studies Students
ALNG Unit provide graduate students studying Middle East MA and diploma with the courses that enable them demonstrate proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic. According to their requirements stated in AUC catalog, the required level of proficiency is tested by the placement exam. For more details click here.
ALNG courses enable students at the Arabic Studies department reach an acceptable level of proficiency in advanced literary Arabic.
Undergraduate Students who do not hold Thanawiya ‘Amma can reach the required proficiency in Arabic either by completing ALNG 312 or its equivalent, or by test. For more details click here.
Graduate students who wish to be eligible for the Master of Arts degree in Arabic Studies can establish their Arabic proficiency by attaining ALNG 201. For more details click here.
Study Abroad and Non-Degree Students An applicant not seeking an AUC degree but who wishes to take AUC courses for academic credit may be admitted as a non-degree student if he/she meets the minimum requirements for AUC admission. AUC is both a US-accredited institution, and one recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in Egypt. Therefore, degree-seeking students at other recognized institutions who wish to augment their education by enrolling for a period of time at the American University in Cairo are welcomed to ALNG courses.
