Arabic Placement Exam

ALNG unit administers a placement exam to facilitate placing students in the appropriate level according to their proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic.  It ranges from the novice high through intermediate, advanced, and superior levels.  The exam tests comprehension and writing. Students are requested to answer as many questions as they can. 

Students eligible for the exam are those who will take a course higher than a beginner level of Modern Standard Arabic Language course, i.e. beyond ALNG 101 or the accelerated ALNG 111. Egyptian Colloquial Arabic courses do not require the placement exam.

Arabic Placement Exam for Degree Students

Samples of the exam are available in the unit. The exam is usually held before the beginning and the end of the semester. To register for the exam, the student has to come in person to the office, together with a recent personal photo and valid AUC ID. Information about exact exam date and location are announced ahead in the ALNG unit, AUC Caravan and Channel, and Freshman Advisor.

Shortly after the exam, results revealing course numbers are available at the ALNG Unit. Students have to come in person to the unit to register their courses as courses are not open for on-line registration. In addition, the results are posted at the student on-line academic record.

Arabic Placement Exam for Non-Degree and Study Abroad Students

The placement exam is posted on-line, where students can log in and try the sample.
 
Logging-in the exam requires issuing an account. Student will have a username and password to access the exam, which is sent to the student’s email. The exam is open before the beginning of each semester. The exact date is announced ahead.

Shortly after the exam, results revealing course numbers are available at the ALNG Unit. Placement in Arabic Language courses is based on the online placement test, the writing component and the Foreign Student Academic Resume.

Notification of the student course is sent to the International Student Services Office, and the student as well via e-mail.
