ALNG Courses

ALNG unit offers variety of courses for elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. The courses cover both modern standard Arabic and Egyptian colloquial Arabic. Modern standard Arabic is taught in the form of a normal track and accelerated track. The regular track courses are 3 credits each and meet five hours per week as ALNG 101 and ALNG 102 that are taught in two consequent semesters.  Whereas, courses at the accelerated track are 6 credits each and meet ten hours per week combining two semesters in one. For example: ALNG 111 = ALNG 101 + ALNG 102. To learn more about the content of ALNG courses, click here.

For a detailed description of courses, check the AUC catalog. Under  “Prefix’ type or select “ALNG.”

The schedule of classes is posted on web for students. “U” for Sunday, “M” for Monday, “T” for Tuesday, “W” for Wednesday, and “R” for  Thursday. Classes usually meet TR or MW, except for accelerated ALNG courses that meet four times a week.

In addition, the program offers writing courses for Thanaweya Amma holders or students who demonstrate equivalent Arabic language proficiency to help them better function in their future workplaces.

CLASS ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCE POLICY

Attendance and participation in class sessions are essential to the process of education at ALNG Unit. Students benefit from the lectures and discussions with their teachers and fellow students. If they fail to attend class, they fail to take advantage of an educational opportunity. In the event a student misses more than three weeks of classes during a semester for any reason, or the equivalent of three weeks in the summer session, an instructor may give a grade of "F" for the course. In addition, the ALNG policy states that each unexcused absence will reduce the grade by 1% of the total grade. For this reason students are expected to attend class regularly.

More details of AUC attendance policy is available in the AUC catalog.

WITHDRAWING OR DROPPING COURSES

After the first week of classes, students who wish to withdraw or drop a course have to complete the Drop/Add form, secure approvals, and submit the form to the Office of the University Registrar in person.

Dates are available at: http://student.aucegypt.edu/Regis_ImpDt.htm

Shortly the student’s on-line account will have one of the following grades according to the date of dropping courses:

· “W” signifying “withdrawn”

· “WP” signifying “withdrawn passing”

· “WF” signifying “withdrawn failing”

If a student has not completed the drop process and stopped attending classes, the course grade will be “F" signifying “Fail”.

A detailed procedure is available at http://student.aucegypt.edu/Regis_Adv_With04F.htm
