Dorm residents say:
"Beside the different backgrounds, it is really great how well we got along, sharing our interests feelings and concerns, and that's what I thought was wonderful about the dorms."

Student Residences

The American University in Cairo, which will open its brand new university campus in New Cairo beginning fall semester 2008, offers two excellent residence facilities for students. The first is the Zamalek residence; historically, a student favorite. The Zamalek residence is located in one of downtown Cairo’s most popular residential districts - Zamalek. It is an island slightly northwest of central Cairo; an urban up-scale area with a large cosmopolitan population. Some of Cairo’s best shopping outlets, entertainment and dining are found in Zamalek. A private sporting club (the Gezira Club), public green areas, an opera house complex, and a new public library (the Greater Cairo Library) make Zamalek a pleasant place to live. It is approximately 38 kilometers, or 23 miles, from the new campus in New Cairo.

Beginning fall semester 2008, AUC’s New Cairo campus will open for business and feature a brand new student residence facility. This second option for student living provides a greater variety of living spaces for both men and women in the form of cottages, or large townhouses. The on-campus residence provides the comfort of close proximity to classes and university life. New Cairo is a new development in the greater Cairo metropolitan area comprising 46,000 acres of land with a projected population of 2.5 million people. The is designed to be a predominantly middle-to-high-income residential community with schools, cultural facilities, commercial enterprises, government agencies, hotels, open spaces, parks and the AUC New Campus at its center. Yet, it will be another few years before the New Cairo district offers the rich, dynamic milieu as downtown Cairo.

New and continuing AUC students interested in AUC campus housing should read the following descriptions of each residence option before submitting a student housing request. Space in campus housing is limited and assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. According to availability at the time a request is received, every effort is made to accommodate students in their preferred residence facility.

Zamalek Residence

The Zamalek Student Residence is located at 16 Mohamed Thakeb Street (off Al Maraashli Street) in Zamalek, a residential section of Cairo where many foreign embassies now occupy the former colonial villas built at the turn of the 19th century.
