Is it possible to request a specific roommate?
Yes. While you are filling out the application form you are asked if you would like to request a specific person as a roommate. However, both roommates are required to send an e-mail to reslife@aucegypt.edu stating their request. Roommates are assigned on a first come, first served basis. AUC cannot guarantee placement of specific roommates.

How long can a friend stay over? What are the rules regarding overnight guests

isitors may be received from 8:00 am to 1:00 am

Male guests are not allowed in the women’s residence area; female guests are not allowed in the men’s residence area. This rule is strictly enforced (visitors are also subject to this regulation)

All overnight visitors must receive advance approval from the student housing office before being allowed to stay overnight. Students will be charged $20 per night (or equivalent in Egyptian pounds) for their guest and are to promptly pay this amount at the CIB bank on campus. Guest fees may not be deducted from any other payment or deposit

Visitors must present an AUC I.D., passport, Egyptian identity card or Egyptian driver’s license at the front security desk and register their names and the name of the resident they are visiting. The resident will be called to meet his/her visitor

All visitors are subject to residence regulations. Violators will not be allowed to re-enter and disciplinary action may be taken against the resident host. Residents are responsible for the behavior of their visitors

Is there an Internet connection provided?
Zamalek: Each room is provided with cables to connect to the internet. There is also a wireless internet connection in the lobby area and cafeteria.

Is there a designated area where I can cook my own food?
There is no facility at any residence for cooking.
Zamalek: The cafeteria is open until 10:00 pm and offers a variety of food. 

Are there refrigerators or any type of storage space for food?

Zamalek: There are no refrigerators available, but renting of a refrigerator can be arranged in coordination with the front desk.

Are the bathrooms communal?
Zamalek: The bathrooms are communal. Each floor shares six toilets, sinks and showers.

What kind of electrical outlets and plugs are used in Egypt?
The outlets in the residences require plugs with two round prongs. If you have a problem with any connections, converters are available and can be easily purchased in Cairo.The current is 220 volts.

How much winter clothing should I bring? Are there heating facilities during the winter?
The rooms are provided with a blanket for each student and heating/cooling air conditioning. Winters in Cairo is not very cold. and rain is not common, but you should still bring jackets and sweaters.
