Arts and Culture

AUC is one of the Cairo's cultural hubs. From art and photography exhibitions by leading artists to film festivals and sold-out theater productions and music concerts, the university provides an exciting range of public events that bring together students, alumni, faculty, staff and members of the Cairo community.

Art

The Department of Performing and Visual Arts presents art exhibitions by students, alumni, faculty, and local and international artists throughout the year, providing learning opportunities for students while contributing to the artistic life of Cairo.

The Sony Gallery for Photography remains the only gallery in Egypt dedicated exclusively to still photography in general and photojournalism specifically. The gallery features four exhibitions per academic year.

Theater

The Department of Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) offers four to six full-length plays and many student-directed one act plays per season, offering students the opportunity to interact with internationally renowned guest artists who are brought to AUC to serve as directors, designers and performers.

Guided by experienced faculty and using the most current resources, the AUC Theater Company produces some of the world’s seminal plays — works by Shakespeare, Pirandello, Sophocles, Farag, Feydeau and Ibsen. Students are involved in every aspect of the productions: acting and directing, set and lighting design, sound, costume construction and makeup. Students also work with renowned guest artists from the world’s leading theater companies.

PVA also supports an active student-produced theatre group, the Howard Cafe, which presents short plays, stand up comedy acts, dance, musical acts, theater games, art exhibitions and poetry events that have gained popularity in Cairo over the last eight years.

Music

The AUC Chamber Choir is a chamber chorus formed of AUC students and members of the local community. The choir performs a wide range of repertory from the Western tradition, ranging from spirituals and folk music to classical repertory and medieval and renaissance masterpieces, with a sprinkling of showtunes and popular music.

The Cairo Choral Society, which has been bringing performances of the great choral-orchestral masterworks to Cairo's concert audiences for more than two decades, has over the years performed the Requiems of Faure, Mozart, Brahms and Verdi; the Glorias of Vivaldi and Poulenc; Haydn's Creation and the Elijah of Mendelssohn. Christmas seasons have been highlighted by performances of Handel's Messiah, the Christmas Oratorios of Bach and Saint-Saens, the Bach Magnificat, and Britten's Ceremony of Carols.

Cultural Activities

The university’s student cultural groups — including the Egyptian Folk Dance Troupe, the Marionette Group, the AUC Oriental Choir and the Cairo Choral Society — practice under the direction of professional artists and perform both in AUC and around Cairo throughout the year. Many groups represent AUC at Egypt’s National University Cultural Activities Competition.
