Research Methods for Guiding Policy and Evaluation
The SRC organizes on annual basis a three months training program on "Research Methods for Guiding Policy and Evaluation" responsive to the needs of development activities in the Arab region, particularly in the fields of population and health. While the substantive focus is on population and health, the basic tools and concepts emphasized in this program cut across many policy areas and social science fields. Hence, certain components of the program are offered to a wider audience, including academics, government ministry personnel, NGO staff and program managers from International donor agencies working in development sectors.
Reproductive Health
The Social Research Center of the American University in Cairo is pleased to announce the launching of its 10th round of the workshop on Reproductive Health titled [From Science to Action: Reproductive Health in the Arab Countries]. The workshop is scheduled to take place on November 4-22, 2007. The workshop has been developed and undertaken with support from the Ford Foundation since 1997 and continues to be held annually at the SRC. It has proved its success and effectiveness through the demonstrated increasing demand among applicants from Egypt and the Arab countries.
Partnership in Development Research
The Egyptian program entitled “Partnership in Development Research” was established in 1999 as part of an international program funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The objective of the program is to inform development policies and strategies through linkages between those who conduct research and those who utilize its findings.
Working Children in Egypt
Working Children in Egypt - an SRC Resource Site - is a repository of information and resources for researchers, policymakers, action groups, and others interested in the situation of working children in Egypt. Working Children in Egypt has been developed by the Social Research Center of the American University in Cairo, with funding from the Egypt office of UNICEF. The project encompasses the acquisition, standardization, and updating of data obtained from a variety of sources including official statistics, surveys, and reports. The site is structured for user-friendly navigation through information on the situation of working children at national and sub-national levels.
Globalization and Women
Globalization is a multifaceted process that manifests itself in the various aspects of life; economic, political, social and cultural. None of these aspects does not bear traits of women’s influence either directly or indirectly. Thus the subject of globalization and its impact on women became of considerable interest in most countries. Tackling this question in different works all over the world reveals that there are two views. The first considers that globalization has been a source of more pressures and responsibilities on women, while the second views globalization as a source of several advantages for women. In fact, both trends are bearing non-negligible traits of reality.
Macro-Economics
Under the sponsorship of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), we have developed this site in order to study the impact of the macroeconomic policies on women with a special focus on Egyptian women. The site tries to assess how macroeconomic policies such as national budgets, economic reform policies, liberalization and structural adjustment programs affect women’s lives.
Economic Participation of Women in Egypt
This site aims to facilitate the flow of information on "Economic Participation of Women" among researchers, policy makers and practitioners. The site acts as a portal providing recent publications, articles as well as information regarding the participation of women. It also aims at the acquisition, standardization and updating of data obtained from a variety of sources to structure them into a user friendly navigation form of information. It also includes useful links to organizations dealing with women issues.
Engendering Economic Governance
We aim to facilitate the flow of information, among researchers, policy makers and practitioners, on the concept of governance. It presents some of the research and proposed action plans for achieving good and efficient governance with a special emphasis on economic governance. The site mainly focuses on Engendering Economic governance through the incorporation of the household-based care economy into an integrated analysis of the total economy. The site acts as a portal providing links to recent publications, articles as well as related conferences and web sites.
Skills Development in Egypt
Skills Development has become a prominent concept that practitioners, policy makers and researchers address with great interest. Our world is witnessing rapid changes, and technological advancement that affect the modes of production and accordingly the needs of labor market. Skills development is considered one of the major keys for creating the labor force with the adequate skills needed in the labor market. Our site focuses on skills development in Egypt from a gender dimension. It examines the current situation of Egyptian women in education, labor market and training, highlighting the efforts undertaken in order to improve the capabilities of women in the Egyptian labor market. We also address a number of important issues including the role of Public Sector and Government, Private Sector and NGO’s in offering training and skills development programs, also the skills standardization efforts in Egypt for the different sectors.
