Agreement Reached And Classes Resume At AUC New Cairo

An agreement was signed between the AUC administration and the Student Union, ending the weeklong lockout at the New Cairo campus and beginning the resumption of normal operations at the University. The agreement covers several key areas, including student participation in administration committees; planning and budgeting; registration and class size; campus services; governance and administrative reform; and disciplinary action. One of the most contentious issues of discussion was the 7 percent increase in this year’s tuition fees, which was ultimately not granted. Instead, tuition increases have been capped at 2.3 percent annually until the fiscal year 2016. All current students may pay their tuition fees in three interest-free installments per semester. Current students requiring financial aid will also be eligible to apply at regular intervals throughout the year.

Dear Parents,

As you all know, we have had an unprecedented start to the new academic year at AUC. The recent events have urged us all to reflect on what we have and what we can make better.
Each and every one of us - students, staff and faculty - exist at AUC to make a difference, to ourselves, to the future of our sons and daughters through education, and to our community and country through service. I have been fortunate to have been closely involved in the discussions between the administration and the students, fortunate to have seen firsthand AUC's education in practice - dialogue leading to change, leadership setting example.

I have always been proud to be a member of this community, and am more now than ever. I have always maintained that it is through hardship that the AUC community emerges, as it always does, united in its commitment to education and to each other.

Best regards,

Since the beginning of the student movement protests, the Parents Association has been actively involved to assist with the resolution of the campus closure and student demands. The University has been keen on keeping the parents close to these discussions and welcoming parent feedback.

This has made a great difference to all of us since, as parents, the discussion of tuition and
quality of education for our sons and daughters directly affects each and every one of us.

AUC has always been a diverse community, with respect for the opinions of young and old. I have been a part of AUC for more than 30 years and I know that, whatever conflict affects this place and its people, be it internal or external, it remains a warm and welcoming community that does good - for its students, for its graduates and for this country. This has not, and will not, change.

Sincerely,
Ghada Wagdy '87
President of the Parents Association
