Graduate School of Education
Recognizing the challenges facing Egypt and the region, the Graduate School of Education (GSE) contributes to education reform by providing theoretical and applied components needed to build the capacity of professionals and policymakers in the education system. GSE consists of various academic and professional development programs, as well as research centers. GSE is an integral part of the academic community at the American University in Cairo.
Vision
The Graduate School of Education (GSE) is a primary vehicle through which The American University in Cairo manifests its commitment to the innovation and improvement of education in Egypt and the Arab world. In particular, the GSE aims to promote equity and excellence in education in Egypt and the region.
Mission
The Graduate School of Education (GSE) serves as a catalyst for educational reform in Egypt and the Arab world. Through its focus on educational equity and excellence, the GSE fosters communities of educational reformers, promotes educational research and prepares educational professionals for all levels. It supports and enhances the practices of reflective professionals, informed policymakers, effective educational leaders and empowered teachers. GSE programs model diverse pedagogies and develop new partnerships.
History
The American University in Cairo (AUC) has a long history of providing intellectual capacity and professional services for the citizens of Egypt. Always mindful of changing societal needs, AUC believes that it must expand its service to Egypt and the region by developing a cadre of well-qualified teachers, administrators and policymakers in the field of education. Doing so now is ideal for two primary reasons: (1) the increasing knowledge base in education throughout the world that has, in many countries, further professionalized the educational workforce and (2) the human capital needs and educational capacity demands in Egypt that have emerged following the revolution. The Graduate School of Education at AUC was authorized by both the Supreme Council of Universities of Egypt and the AUC Board of Trustees in 2009.
Ultimately, our value should be determined by the extent to which we…
- Cultivate and support educational reformers and developers who know how to change and improve instructional and policy systems.
- Develop and equip educational practitioners who use best practices, evidence, and professional knowledge to make instructional and leadership decisions.
- Provide research to guide development and reform in the Middle East.
- Build networks of reformers, faculties, developers, practitioners, and leaders who support one another with research, motivation, and resources.
