He is an assistant professor in Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at The American University in Cairo. In 2009, Elmasry received his PhD in journalism and mass communication from the University of Iowa, where he was a presidential fellow.
Between 2009 and 2011, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mass Communication at Qatar University in Doha, Qatar. Elmasry’s research, which has been published in reputable publications and presented at international academic conferences, focuses on the sociology of news, Arab press systems, Western media reportage of Islam and Muslims, and news coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict. His PhD dissertation examined the ways news is produced in Egypt. Elmasry has taught courses in media ethics, advanced reporting and writing, global communication, media research methods, and media theory.
