Toward a Sustainable Society in the MENA Region: Roadmap and Priorities

Introduction

Out of a firm belief in the role of civil society and multi-stakeholder engagement in the creation of sustainable societies in the MENA region, the Business and Society Research Cluster (BSRC) at the German University in Cairo, and El-Khazindar Business Research and Case Center at The American University in Cairo, and Misr El-Kheir Foundation, Egypt (MEK) would like to invite writers to submit case studies for the conference Toward a Sustainable Society in the MENA Region: Roadmap and Priorities, which will be taking place at Dusit Thani hotel, New Cairo City, on March 1st  and 2nd  2012. Outstanding case studies will be published in a special issue of the The MENA Journal of Case Studies published by IBIMA Publishing (http://www.ibimapublishing.com/journals/MENA/mena.html). The special  issue will be co-edited by Ahmed Tolba, assistant professor  of  marketing, AUC (ahmedtolba@aucegypt.edu), and Noha  El- Bassiouny, lecturer of marketing at the GUC (noha.elbassiouny@guc.edu.eg).

Sustainability is a critical scientific domain on the global agenda at present times. Scholarly discourse around the topic revolves around three basic dimensions: social, economic, and environmental aspects. Topics such as consumer ethics, the hazards of consumerism especially to vulnerable groups, business and marketing ethics, cause-related marketing, green chemistry, energy-efficient households, clean consumer technologies, amongst many others, have all pointed direction toward the criticality of sustaining the living practices of the present generation without forsaking the coming ones. This will only be achieved via the establishment of sustainable societies, which require both the awareness and the engagement of multiple stakeholders; including governments, private sector, individuals, and civil society organizations at large.
